Imagine owning a share in the unusual white filly that Kris Lees bought for John Singleton for $270,000 at last year’s Magic Millions yearling sale. And not only getting it for nothing but having all the training fees paid for. The filly’s distinctive colouring, rare in thoroughbreds and her outstanding pedigree attracted nation wide interest. Eight race goers who attend the Bluetongue Cup meeting at Wyong on Sunday, February 22 will win the opportunity to own 10 percent of the filly for her entire racing career. They will race her in partnership with John Singleton and rugby league legend Andrew “Joey” Johns. And it won’t cost a cent. The filly will be prepared by Group One winning trainer Kris Lees with John Singleton paying all the training fees. The owners will each receive one tenth of her net earnings. The filly, which has been named The Opera House, is by New Zealand’s champion sire Zabeel from the Star Way mare Carmina Burana and is a three quarter sister to the 1997 Melbourne cup winner Might And Power. The promotion is tied to Bluetongue Brewery in which John Singleton is a major shareholder and is restricted to outlets selling Bluetongue products on the Central Coast and in the Hunter. Here’s how it works. Punters who purchase Bluetongue six packs, cases or draught beer at a participating Bluetongue stockist in the Hunter and Central Coast region until February 21 will receive a uniquely coded wrist band. They must attend the Bluetongue Cup meeting at Wyong on Sunday, February 22, wearing their wrist band, to be eligible to be in the draw. The wrist band will be scanned by a member of the Bluetongue Rangers team at the entry to the track with the eight winners to be announced between noon and 5pm. Entrants must be present at the announcement to win their prize. Bluetongue’s Marketing Manager, Sarah Dennis, said a significant amount of the company’s total sales came from the Hunter and Central Coast. “We are looking for a way to give something back to our most loyal drinkers,” Sarah said. “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for a few locals to share in the winnings of a horse with Joey and John – who wouldn’t jump at that.” The feature race on that day is the $40,000 Rating 71 Bluetongue Cup (1200m).
