Punters who followed the lead and backed Recondo at good odds were cheering when the three year old scored a solid first up win in the CTC Toukley Benchmark 61 (1100m). Recondo was backed late from $12 to $10 then stuck his neck out on the line to win in a blanket four horse finish. “That was a very brave win,” jockey Tim Clark told connections when he returned to scale. Recondo is trained by Patrick and Wayne Webster and was having his third start and his first since a spell for the father and son training duo. Recondo was originally trained by Mark de Montfort but after being gelded was put out and left in the paddock for 12 months. “After I got him I took him to Goulburn and he ran fifth first up beaten less than a length,” Wayne Webster said. “I then took him to Kembla Grange and he ran into trouble so I decided to look for an easy race so the owners could have some money in the bank and I took him to Muswellbrook. “He won there so I tipped him out again. “This time in we will see what he can really achieve.” Clark had Recondo mid field then moved up to be just behind the leaders on the turn. In the straight he moved up to challenge and Recondo, Beau De lago, Chemin De Marc and Miss Synchronicity all hit the line in a blanket finish. The same pattern developed in the following race when the Mark de Montfort trained Pathway (Mitchell Bell) was backed late from $7 to $5.50 and stormed down the outside to win the Twin Lakes Air Conditioning Benchmark 60 (2100m). Pathway was third last at one stage and gradually circled the field to come away and win by three quarters of a length. “I had hopes for this horse but he injured himself and has taken a long time to come right,” de Montfort said. “He should be winning metropolitan races. “Perhaps he has had a confidence boost so I will head back to town with him now.”
