Punters were up in arms after the rank outsider Upinahms smashed the previous class record to win the Green Living King Class One (1000m). Upinahms, perfectly ridden by Kathy O’Hara, blew from $41 to $61 and ran the distance in 56.99 seconds, clipping more than half a second off the previous best. “I thought she could win,” said Jan Bowen who bred, owns and trains the mare at Muswellbrook. “That is just the best feeling.” O’Hara surprised Bowen when she returned to scale by suggesting the mare’s best distance could be 1400 metres. “She just relaxed and travelled,” O’Hara said. Punters backed several horses including Kiss ‘N Chase which finished second and the third placed Eyelady. However once O’Hara took advantage of the cutaway at the top of the straight and drove the mare to the lead the others did not have a hope of catching her. The win by Upinahms followed her maiden win at Gunnedah the start before.
